A new homegrown marketplace app called Prelo is changing the way Australians buy and sell second-hand items — making it safer, faster, and free from awkward meet-ups.

Prelo allows users to list and sell their pre-loved items with just a few taps. Buyers and sellers never have to exchange personal details — not even addresses or bank details. Once a sale is made, a prepaid courier label is generated automatically.

“Most people love the idea of decluttering and giving things a second life, but not the hassle that comes with it,” said Hinrichs. “Between flaky buyers, sharing your address, and waiting in post office queues, the process often feels like more effort than it’s worth. Prelo fixes that with its privacy-first design and seamless delivery integration.”

The app connects directly with courier services, arranging door-to-door collection and delivery once an item sells. Buyers cover the postage, sellers get paid securely through the app, and both parties can leave reviews.

Beyond convenience, Prelo is also part of a growing movement toward sustainable consumption. Every transaction on the app represents one less new product manufactured, helping to reduce waste and emissions. According to the Australian Fashion Council’s Clothing Data Report, Australians buy an average of 56 new clothing items each year (2018–19).

The app’s future “Carbon Tracker” feature will go a step further — showing users exactly how much carbon they’ve saved by choosing second-hand instead of buying new. It translates those savings into relatable comparisons, like kilometres of car travel avoided or flights offset, turning everyday resale activity into a tangible contribution toward a cleaner planet.

“Second-hand shouldn’t mean second-class,” Hinrichs added. “Prelo is about making the sustainable choice feel just as smooth as shopping online for something new.”
